What is a Dodge build sheet?

A build sheet is the factory's own record of how one specific vehicle was assembled. For a Dodge it lists every sales code — engine, transmission, axle, paint, packages, and options — tied to the VIN.

It's the most reliable way to confirm how a used Charger, Challenger, or Durango was originally configured — far more dependable than a badge or a listing.

What the build sheet shows

Powertrain, trim, exterior and interior colors, wheels, option packages, and dealer-installed-at-factory equipment — the details that explain why two cars with the same model name can feel completely different.

On performance models it separates the genuine hardware — Scat Pack, SRT, Hellcat equipment — from appearance packages that only look the part.

Sales codes explained

Stellantis / FCA vehicles use 3-character factory sales codes on the build sheet. One package code can bundle several smaller features, so reading the sheet carefully tells you what the car actually carries.

Factory data is the baseline, not proof of current condition — wheels, audio, and trim may have changed since delivery, so use the sheet alongside photos and an inspection.

As someone who collects window stickers, I run a lot of VINs through a lot of tools, and this week I ran my own 2017 Challenger through five free decoders as an experiment. Results ranged from impressively complete to confidently wrong, including one that invented a sunroof my car has never had. For those who have compared: how accurate are the free Dodge decoders in general? Which details do they usually nail, and which should I never trust without checking the factory record? Curious whether my sample of five is typical.

Typical. Free tools decode the seventeen characters correctly almost always, so year, plant, engine family, and body are safe. Everything beyond that is database garnish of wildly varying quality. Any option-level claim from a free decoder is a rumor until the factory record agrees.

The invented sunroof happens because some tools display equipment common to the trim rather than your car. Structural data good, option data decorative. Factory listing or nothing for options.

Five decoders, four opinions sounds like my experience exactly. I keep one free tool for quick sanity checks and go to the real record for anything I would spend money on.
