This policy explains how DecodeDodgeVin.com (the “Site”) processes information when you use the Site, run a VIN lookup, purchase a report, or contact us.
1. Information we process
The VIN you enter. When you run a lookup, the 17-character VIN is sent to the services that perform it (see “Vehicle-information services” below) and is included in the page URL (for example ?vin=…) so the result is shareable and reloadable. A VIN identifies a vehicle rather than a person, but it can become identifying combined with other records, so avoid posting a full VIN publicly.
Purchase information. If you buy a report, payment is processed by Paddle. Depending on the transaction we may receive or store limited payment-related information such as the Paddle transaction or checkout ID, payment status, the purchased product, amount and currency, the customer email address where provided, country or other transaction metadata made available by Paddle, and an internal report identifier used to unlock the purchased result. We do not receive or store your full payment-card number.
Diagnostic and error data. We use Sentry to record errors and basic events (for example, that a lookup ran) so we can keep the Site reliable. These records can include the VIN, your browser and device type, and your IP address, and are used for debugging and operating the service.
Network and technical data. Our hosting and edge network (Cloudflare) process your IP address and request details to deliver pages and to apply basic rate limiting that prevents abuse.
Traffic-source measurement. On your first visit we record how you arrived — the referring website’s hostname and the utm_source value from the address, if present — to our own server. This is aggregate first-party measurement: it stores a count per source, not a profile of you, and does not include the VIN or your IP address.
Support messages. If you contact us, we process what you send, such as your email address, your message, and any details needed to investigate a problem.
2. How we use information
- to perform VIN lookups and generate reports;
- to deliver purchased reports and validate payment status;
- to provide customer support;
- to diagnose errors and failed transactions;
- to prevent fraud and protect the Site against abuse;
- to maintain security and reliability;
- to comply with legal obligations.
We do not use a VIN to build a personal advertising profile.
3. Payment processing by Paddle
Purchases are processed by Paddle, which acts as the Merchant of Record and authorized reseller for the paid digital product.
Paddle processes checkout and payment information, billing information, fraud-prevention data, and tax information under Paddle’s own privacy notice and buyer terms. DecodeDodgeVin.com does not receive or store your full payment-card number.
4. Vehicle-information services
To return a result the Site uses Stellantis / FCA vehicle services and the NHTSA VIN-decode API, together with our own backend and equipment data. The VIN is shared with these services only as needed to perform the requested lookup or report.
5. Cookies and local storage
The Site uses technical browser storage necessary for normal operation, for the traffic-source measurement described above, for payment state, and to avoid repeating the same diagnostic event.
Paddle Checkout may use cookies or similar technologies necessary for payment processing, checkout functionality, fraud prevention, and compliance.
The Site does not serve advertising and does not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. Most browsers also let you block or delete cookies.
6. Service providers and data sharing
We share information only where necessary with the providers that support the Site:
- Paddle, for payment processing;
- Cloudflare, for hosting, delivery and security;
- Sentry, for error diagnostics;
- the vehicle-information services listed above, to perform VIN decoding.
We may also disclose information where required by law or reasonably necessary to protect the Site, its users, or others from fraud or abuse. We do not sell personal information as a standalone data product.
7. Data retention
We keep information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described here. A VIN is processed to produce a result; where a report is purchased, limited transaction and report-linkage information is kept as needed to deliver or restore access to the purchase, provide support, prevent fraud, or handle a refund request. Diagnostic logs are retained only as long as needed for operation, security and troubleshooting. Paddle retains payment records according to its own requirements.
8. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures intended to protect the Site and the information it processes. No internet service can guarantee absolute security.
9. International processing
The Site and its service providers may process information in countries other than the one where you live.
10. Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or restriction of personal information. To make a request, contact us at [email protected].
11. Children’s privacy
The Service is not directed to children and is not intended for use by children who cannot legally enter into an online purchase.
12. The browser extension
The “Dodge VIN Decoder” browser extension requests no special permissions and collects no data on its own. When you enter a VIN and select the button, it opens DecodeDodgeVin.com with that VIN — after which this policy applies.
13. Third-party links
The Site may link to third-party websites. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies.
14. Changes
We may update this policy when the Service, payment processing, data sources, or legal requirements change. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above.
