What is a Dodge build sheet?

A build sheet is the factory's own record of how one specific vehicle was assembled. For a Dodge it lists every sales code — engine, transmission, axle, paint, packages, and options — tied to the VIN.

It's the most reliable way to confirm how a used Charger, Challenger, or Durango was originally configured — far more dependable than a badge or a listing.

What the build sheet shows

Powertrain, trim, exterior and interior colors, wheels, option packages, and dealer-installed-at-factory equipment — the details that explain why two cars with the same model name can feel completely different.

On performance models it separates the genuine hardware — Scat Pack, SRT, Hellcat equipment — from appearance packages that only look the part.

Sales codes explained

Stellantis / FCA vehicles use 3-character factory sales codes on the build sheet. One package code can bundle several smaller features, so reading the sheet carefully tells you what the car actually carries.

Factory data is the baseline, not proof of current condition — wheels, audio, and trim may have changed since delivery, so use the sheet alongside photos and an inspection.

Trying to run the middle van of my fleet, a 2015 Grand Caravan, through a decoder and every site rejects the VIN as invalid. I am reading it straight off the dash through the windshield, seventeen characters, triple-checked. Clearly I am misreading at least one character, but which ones are the usual suspects? The dash plate is a little scratched and the light in my garage is not doing me favors. What characters do people most commonly enter wrong, and is there a smarter way to capture it than squinting?

Classic culprits: reading a stamped zero as the letter O, a one as the letter I, and a five as S. Helpfully, VINs never contain the letters I, O, or Q at all, so any of those in your transcription is automatically wrong. Swap them for the digits and retry.

Skip the squinting entirely. The door jamb label has the same VIN printed cleanly, and a phone photo you can zoom beats the scratched dash plate every time.

Also check character nine gripes: some sites reject on the check digit when one character elsewhere is off, so the error may not be where the site claims. Retype from the jamb label fresh rather than editing your first attempt.

It was an O that should have been a zero, naturally. Jamb label photo confirmed it, decoder accepted it, and the middle van has an identity again.
